New Hope

While volunteering in Cambodia in 2010, I had the opportunity to meet and photograph people from a tiny village behind a school called “New Hope.” The village itself almost entirely consisted of brothels, many whose women and mothers were sick from HIV, leading to a strong percentage of sick children and babies, mostly with tuberculosis (TB), but sometimes with BOTH HIV and TB. Despite their filthy, dilapidated environment, lack of food, clean water and resources, the villagers were kind-hearted and welcoming, while the children were extremely playful and loving. The people of this village would seem tortured to us in many ways, but they are gracious for having life and you can see the fight in their eyes to survive.
